Article.
It looks like only the Army will be getting these, and not the Marine Corps... I guess the Corps will stick to the "handy" M-16...? A witty saying proves nothing - Voltaire |

I really find it hard to believe that this will happen by FY05; matter of fact I would put money on it. There are always rumors about what is going to get done, what is going to replace what, and when it all will get done.
In regards to the new weapons system. . . it looks flexible to change for different environments. Why they would give it to only one service I don't know(money most likely)? In my opinion the services should try to standardize on this issue, much like that of all the new cammo coming out. Although the AR-15 variations are far from being obsolete I really don't see why the majority of Marine units, and AF security forces have not yet been upgraded to the more agile M4 version. Even now that the Guard and Reserves are playing a much more active role, and should be subject to the same weapons upgrades. All in all though it comes down to money, and whats affordable. In the long run though I bet DoD would save a noticable sum of money if they standardized the basic infantry weapon. It is better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep. Well H&K are the ones doing the building so it should be a good one.
I don't care for the looks of it but then I won't have to carry one will I. Means all new weapons racks, cleaning kits, magazines, etc. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT! |

Just remember, whe the M16 1st came out, it was a piece of sh*t.
It fouled up, jammed, and the barrels bent real easy. The M16 has come a long way. HK, now owned by British Aerospace, produce excellent weapons, that have stood the test of time, and have been sought out by special forces long before they became the weapon of choice of many special forces and swat teams. One of the fore ruuners in insisting on HK products was the British SAS, and HK products have been used in many war zones, and situations, both foriegn and domestic. HK OK Train Hard, Fight Easy. |

Bottom Line!!!!!
If you had to go into combat, what would you carry???? Main Arm, and Side Arm. The choice could be the difference between coming home or not. Train Hard, Fight Easy. |

I have an H&K USP Tactical and if it's ANY indication of the quality of H&K, that riffle should be awesome!! The only thing I don't like about the rifle is that it is going to be 5.56 NATO

quote: 7.62x51 or 54 NATO would be much better than the 5.56 !!! I like my L1A1 pretty well. I guess they're trying cut down the weight that a soldier has to carry by using the 5.56. "We raise our glasses against the forces of evil" |

Well, I think I would opt for the L1A1 for my rifle and my H&K USP Tactical in 45acp for my sidearm.

I always liked the Galil myself, in 7.62. But I'd take it in 5.56 too.

quote:Had the distinct pleasure of firing a Galil a long time ago. Very nice weapon! Did a Weapons Seminar with the Guard, man who taught it also taught State Police throughout New England, had about every imaginable assault weapon and sniper rifle. All the yahoos wanted to shoot the AK, I went straight for the Galil. |

Isn't the Galil based upon the AK?
