The answer to Vietnam I renlisted to go to Vietnam so I guess the US Navy let me go .
I volunteered on my 'Dream Sheets' for VietNam as my overseas shore duty - but my NEC was shipboard.

But be clear on your other answer, don't be shy about fleshing it out - Wink

The seaman was Doiug Hegdahl - fell off the USS Canberra off North Vietnam in '67... Released in '70

And evidently your friends know little about the Warrior's Code...

for example - when the Confederates surrendered at Appomattox.. General Chamberlain, who accepted the surrender on behalf of the Union, saluted the Confederate troops as the filed past. They were allowed to keep their sidearms and horses. Their honor as warriors, though defeated, was recognized and upheld.

This is quite common. As a cop, I was often honored and respected by many of the criminals I arrested, if I merely respected them in turn and did not maltreat them unneccessarily. Quite often, when running into some when off duty; they were as likely to share a beer or coffee with me as the next person. And in some rough times, a few even pulled my fat out of the fire...

One repects the 'Warrior' for whom he is...not neccessarily the cause for which they fought... For the cause may merely be the result of an accident of birth...

I've some very close friends in Detroit Homicide who say exactly the same thing. There are some criminals who are stand up guys and some cops who are not.

One seasoned Homicide Dick had at least two cases solved by information from people he had busted simply because of the way he treated them.

Unfortunately occupation does not equal character.

The Warrior Code would have solved a lot of problems we now face in Iraq if we had treated the Iraqi Soldiers with some respect instead of disbanding them as if they were not worthy of consideration.

I've heard of people going back to Nam and having a beer with the guy that was trying to kill them forty years ago. My father did the same with some members of the Whermacht but there are some who will never forgive. Some WWII vets won't even ride in a Japanese car because they simply cannot give it up.

Don't think there'll be much cameraderie between ex-military and ex-terrorist though.

Sully, sorry, but I was a dumb Grunt in Nam. I'm just NOT familiar with this "Warrior Code" that is being tossed around here!

I arrived in Nam in April '69. THANKS to a whole lot of BROS who made mincemeat out of the VC during TET'68, my unit just did NOT have serious problems with those shits. We worked the routes into Nam from Cambodia along the Parrot's Beak, trying to disrupt the NVA's supplies.

Now, the NVA? Sure, I have a bit of respect for them because they wore a uniform. They were willing to make a stand and let everyone know about it! VC, though...no one EVER told us the Geneva Conventions afforded THOSE COMMIE SHETS ANY sort of protections!

I see NO reason, 36 years later, that our young Warriors should feel ANY phouching different TODAY, with sub-humans, in civilian clothes, willing to take em out, DO YOU?

I went back to Vietnam in 2000 with ten other Vietnam Veterans, one of which I served with. He has taken several groups back (I believe its been about five trips for him). He is taking another trip either later this year or next.

We spent three weeks there, mostly in the ICorps area visiting places where we had served. We had two guides that were both ex-NVA from that area.

I personally enjoyed the trip and it helped me put some things into their proper place and helped me with some emotions.

The Vietnamese people treated us really great. A good majority of Vietnamese people now were born after the war and you can see they are really wanting to establish a relationship with America.

Thud I saw that Bugler off of USS Arizona talk to that Japanese Pilot but I also heard that other Okie call them Japs.I have no gruge against the NVA because they were in uniform but Viet Cong were not I saw VC butchery I will not call them Warriors. The VC came from the North to disrupt the South which did not want to be under Comminuist Gov.their tactics were not sweet.

yogiwhen I got to Danang in 65 it was pretty hot sometimes but there was a lot people there by then that Valley going up to 1st Marines was loaded 5th Special Forces ,MAG16 ,3rd AMTRAC had a USMC combat team up there.I went to others places on boat repair teams Dong Hoa,Tam MI, Hue,Phu BI I finaly ended up at Cua Viet it was a sometimes jump off point for USMC coming down from Rock Pile and a lot of US Army coming down from those big guns along the DMZ.

GaryI read some websites that help people go back I guess I wouldn't mind going back and see the place if I was going to get to be with friends but I go to the Wall every year with two Buddies.I see all of my Brothers that day.

Nope, never got to talk to anybody in person yet but I've read a few accounts and I've heard Gary mention it a couple of times. All seem to have some common threads such as they were at least partially motivated by personal reasons and that there seemed to be a mutual respect between them and the NVA guys they met.

Never heard anybody speak on their reaction to people who were VC.

I have talked to some WWII vets from the other side and the respect seems to exist for the most part.
