Well folks, I FINALLY discovered the secret to good mess decks coffee !!! I usually make my coffee pretty strong, but it's been lacking that certain "zing" I'm used to. Today, I stumbled on the secret!!! I had some coffee left over from yesterday, so I poured it in my stainless steel percolator, sans the stem and coffee basket. Then, today, as I was out pushing snow around, I left my regular coffee pot ( a drip coffee maker) on all day. Finally, I had been too busy to restart it, so I poured the remainder of that into the existing pot sitting on the stove.(No fire had yet been applied to warm the old stuff.) I added a little water to compensate for the evaporation and turned on the gas. After it came to a boil, voila !! I poured a cup and thought to myself, "Hmmm, this tastes familiar". All of a sudden, it dawned on me, it was reminiscient of the mess decks coffee !! HOT & strong !!

It seems, probably due to the McDonalds lawsuit from that clumsy woman who burned herself, the manufacturers have turned down the heat on the coffeemakers. I had been wondering if this were the case, as my cup would get cool within 10 mins. Frowner Now, with the stovetop version, I CAN control the HEAT !! Just under boiling, it comes out just fine !! Smiler

If it won't bore a hole through a styrofoam cup, then it ain't strong enough.

Nah, good coffee has to AGE! I remember that we had a 30 cup maker in the engine room on a destroyer I was on, it never went dry and was never cleaned for an entire deployment! I "shit you NOT"! That was the best coffee I have EVER had! Big Grin

You think it's strong out on the messdecks - you should try it in the Goat Locker! OMG! We could use it to shine brass or polish our boots! Big Grin

My uncle used to talk about something called shaft-alley coffee, he was a navy man from the 30's.
