A wee bitty history for today..
Sixty-five years ago, 3 Sept 1944, the 2nd Canadian Division paraded through out the streets of Dieppe after its liberation. Two years earlier the division was decimated in the infamous raid, but this time, they approached from the land side as they moved up the French Channel coast. The significance of the 2nd Division entering Dieppe for a second time was not lost on the Germans and they vacated the town ahead of the Canadian arrival. The Canadian commander stopped the war for a day as the Canadians led by the massed pipes and drums of the Division (Calgary Highlanders, Winnipeg Camerons, Black Watch Canada, Windsor's Essex Scottish and the Toronto Scottish) paraded through the streets where they were met with thunderous applause. Field Marshal Montgomery was incensed when he learned of it...so be it...the Division paid respect to the men who were lost in 1942. The citizens of Dieppe to this day have not forgotten the sacrifice of the men of the 2nd Canadian Division. As of July 2000 the TSR were commemorated for their role in the raid with a plaque that was placed in a prominent place in Square du Canada, Dieppe. On a personal note.. The Good Padre dedicated the plaque that now graces the wall of the castle keep once held by the Germans during the ill fated assault. A moving and thought provoking trip back in Y2K. There I was , at the head of the old 68th... |
