Just how serious are we? I have the uneasy feeling this is not a seachange in longstanding US defacto policy of turning the other way while illegals flood in here to provide cheap labor for bigwig corporate contributors on the one hand and Leftwing politicians looking for a permananent underclass to exploit on the other.

I have heard that the few troops already deployed resulted in an immediate reduction in illegal crossings.

But I also know that the Border Patrol routinely notified Mexican authorities where the Minutemen were stationed.

I have the gut feeling there will be no more serious enforcement of border security after the November elections. Whichever way they turn out.

Meanwhile everybody concerned about this issue might want to have a gander at this column by Pat Buchanan about the Trojan Horse being offered up by the House by Mike Pence in response to the DOA Senate immigration bill. No doubt with a wink and a nudge.

http://www.townhall.com/opinion/column/patbuchanan/2006/06/13/200954.html

quote:
In "The Godfather," Don Corleone warns his son Michael that, after he dies, someone inside the family will come to Michael with an offer of peace from the Barzinis, who murdered Michael's brother. Whoever brings you the offer, Don Corleone warns his son, will have betrayed you. Tessio, lifetime friend and high-ranking captain of the Corleones, comes to Michael with Barzini's offer. A mistake.

Rep. Mike Pence appears to have accepted the Tessio role in the great immigration battle of 2006...Pence calls his plan a "middle ground" proposal, a "no amnesty immigration reform" in which "securing our border is the first step."

This is fraudulent. At the heart of the Pence plan is amnesty. Illegal aliens here return to Mexico for one week with an assurance they can come back to their jobs. Down there, they visit "Ellis Island Centers" to register as "guest workers" and return with "work permits." The illegal are made legal and put on a path to citizenship.

The only difference between the Pence plan and the Kennedy-Bush amnesty is the one-week vacation employers would happily fund, as it means blanket amnesty for them as well as their illegal hires.

Why is Pence proposing capitulation at the moment Americans are looking to the Republican House as their last, best hope to kill the Senate amnesty, end the "guest-worker" scam and get control of America's borders before we lose our country?

Answer: The forces in Washington pushing for an amnesty deal, by whatever name, are immense -- the White House, the ethnic lobbies, the Big Media, mainstream churches, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the "conservative" front groups and foundations they finance, and corporate contributors to congressmen who fear law enforcement. Then there is a Democratic Party that voted 10-to-one in the Senate for amnesty, as it looks to legalized aliens as future voters to bury the conservative cause forever in this city.

Anyone who thinks the establishment has given up because it has lost the country does not know it. Behind closed doors, deals are even now being discussed for a "compromise" bill that will give GOP congressmen cover for selling out the cause for which they bravely voted in December.

So, reading between the lines, look for Guard troops to be quietly "undeployed" late this year. My .02 anyway.

Seeing a big difference down here in Yuma since the Guard started showing up in droves!

PT..

"But I also know that the Border Patrol routinely notified Mexican authorities where the Minutemen were stationed"

What factual information are you basing this knowledge on?

I would be very interested to know if this is true and if so....then why?

Thanks for the links PT.

It really grieves me that this appears to have some value to it. My Dad was a Chief in the Border Patrol and he predicted for many years that the placement of Congressional favorites, rather than qualified agents into high ranking BP positions would someday bite us on the ass. It would have broke his heart to see this happening.

I have mixed feelings about this one, but it really seems that our government doesn't know what the hell our NG is for these days....just my opinion....but hey, whatever works for them right?

I would think that this use of the National Guard, which is, supposedly, the descendant of the Militia entitled to carry arms under the 2nd amendment, is actually closer to its original purpose, which was, as I understand US history, for them to ' defend ' the state from oppressors foreign and domestic [ , etc. . and, if an ' invasion ' of foreign nationals, even unarmed ones, adversely affects the nation, then preventing their entry would seem to be a legitimate use of the Guard...

How effective they will be in preventing such incursions, since they are being used in a secondary role as advisors/augments to the Border Patrol and not as a first/front line preventative remains to be seen and, obviously, they are part of a much larger political agenda as well..

What it does show is that, however despised the US is in some world circles, it is still the preferred destination of millions of people seeking freedomm, liberty and the hope for a better future...

I wouldn't deride or dismiss Dubya on this one, as many of his predecessors on both sides of the line, Rep. and Dem. have had to face this problem and none have come up with an equitable and acceptable solution that satisfied both the refugee/immigrants and the national interest...

tough call...

I can see the border from my house and in the 8 months I lived here, I've never seen a helicopter....Except lately. Three times in the last couple weeks. Don't know if it's due to this new effort, but nice to see.

Part of the problem is that via reconquista, Senor Vicente Fox wishes to become the President of the United States of Mexico. From Colorado on down.

Instead that is of getting Mexico's butt in gear and revamping their society and rooting out corruption from top to bottom (a tall order). They are sitting on a pile of natural resources and should be able to become a first world country like Canada instead of a 3rd world latrine. Then they wouldn't have to come up here.

Mexico's border policies (on their Southern border) should be our own. Instead they are fugging hypocrites.

I agree with Rocketeer, this is a proper role for the NG. Why did the Terminator of all people resist it?

This is a news article from my area.
It's not just south of Colorado.America has been invaded, and like the boatlift from Cuba, many of these people are criminals and the mentally ill.

AZ National Guard 'starting to show some impact here'
Troops support law-enforcement efforts on border
By Arthur H. Rotstein
The Associated Press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 06.24.2006

YUMA — Pvt. Ashley Christopher, a member of the Arizona National Guard for only a year, and Sgt. 1st Class Henry Castillo, who has served more than two decades, reflect the diversity of Guard volunteers supporting the Border Patrol's Southwest border clampdown.
But they say all the guardsmen share a sense of mission, and none consider the new job to be a hardship.

Here in Yuma, the coyotes are now charging an extra grand to smuggle them in. It cost them 3K now. Very few are taking them up on it.

Sgt Castillo is a perfect example of "hyphenated" Americans becoming just plain Americans. Just one reason this became the greatest country on Earth.
If he ever joins us, ask Bean about bilingual education, Mexican flag wavers, et.al. cuss Big Grin

Well ive got several friends in the ARNG working the border in NM...Mostly in a support role but they apparently are making a difference. The stats on arrests on the border are down 25% since the full 6000 soldiers have been in place...I mean its a problem we are always goning to have but this proactive response seems like a lot more than any other administration has done. Its amazing how politicans can actually make a difference when their not worried about being PC or losing points on a poll.

I am a Border Patrol Agent as well as a member of the Texas Guard. In the area that I work at, the national guard deployment is mostly a political "dog and pony show". There are a bunch of guard guys at my station and they are not alllowed to do anything that is even remotely helpful to us. They are basically told to stand around and do nothing. It is not the fault of the soldiers- our upper management does not allow them to do anything and makes them stand around. Every time that we make a significant seizure we are required to stage pictures with the national guard to show how "successful " the mission is.

They have soldiers to help with admin tasks, but at our station this has led to giving our secretary 3 assistants while putting NO additional agents in the field.

Any decline in apprehensions at my station is due to the fact that we lost our detention officers who transported detainees to detention centers/Mexico, and pulling agents from the field to do these duties has left us shorthanded.

I don't blame the soldiers-they are simpoly forbidden to do anything productive. I would hate to be working the border mission, and I am sure teh hard charger types guys are bored as hell. I place the blame squarely on Border Patrol managemnet for misusing these guys.

I have heard that in some areas it is working better. Apparently the New Mexico stations already had a working reltionship with teh Guard prior to this year, and the Guard is suppossed to be helping over there somewhat. Where I am at though, teh mission is on e big boondoggle.
