when the hell did this happen?!? No wait, dumb question. This stuff was signed into law on May 11, 2005. How the hell did this escape notice?

First off, I stumbled across this b/c of a link to a petition that my brother posted on his blog. The petition here is sponsored by the ACLU, but I suspect will be ultimately pointless, since this legislation was signed into law 2 years ago. Upon visiting the link, I decided to do a little more research, and here's a list of the highlights (note, I used wikipedia as a primary reference, so some stuff could conceivably be wrong, but the wiki admin guys are pretty anal about making sure stuff is correct and stays correct):

If you don't have a national ID card:
1. Federal agencies cannot accept other forms of identification, which includes the TSA (I'm sorry, you wanted to fly today? not without a federal id, you don't)
2. You won't be able to get hired for a job, since states are required to keep a record of new employees for the SSA, and the SSA will only be able to accept "compliant" documents for identification (re: national ID card)
3. Want to get a bank account or open a trading account for the stock market? Whip out that national ID card, buddy, or financial institutions can't help you.

The legislation also covered how states are required to share their databases of who's registered where, etc.

Anyway, I'm getting depressed and more paranoid by the minute, reading this article. If you're interested, which I'm sure you are, here's the wikipedia link: REAL_ID

Excuse me while I go buy more guns and ammo.

Isn't a 'Passport' a National ID?

When I hear the term ACLU I reach for a gun.

Sad, maybe, but a National ID card may be needed now. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it anymore than I do carrying a DL or passport for going abroad. I might have supported the "immigration" bill if it had had a clause requiring anyone to present PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP before they can cast a farkin vote. As it is now you can register to vote without showing jack.

Also more MANDATORY regulations like that guy in Oregon is proposing, LEGAL WORKERS ONLY. Look if everybody was playing by the same rules and contracters and sub-contracters only hired legals, we wouldn't have this problem. Illegals keep wages and working conditions below national and natural market levels.

A national ID card would help enforce the laws already on the books. If you MUST show it when sopped by a LEO, that would help et around these idiotic "sanctuary" city rules where cops are not allowed to ask.

So we can either start packing an ID card or have more 9-11's at worst or become a 3rd World country at best.

Jobs Americans Won't Do: drywall, construction, carpentry, road work, asphalt paver, waiter, landscaping, etc. etc. Bravo Sierra. Do you actually believe that? Americans will do all those jobs at decent wages and have for centuries.

somehow, the whole issue of illegal immigrants in relation to the national ID thing completely flew over my head. You know, PT, I think you're probably right, but I still don't like how easily this could be turned against regular citizens.
