Once on the Nimitz, I was on the 09 level gallery on the starboard side sea-gazing....I didn't hear the 'clear the sponsons' order in time to get off the gallery deck and the starboard mount right below me did a test track and fire exercise.

That was the closest I came to shitting my dungarees......in my entire hitch....Loud and the vibrations resonated every internal organ beneath my ribcage. I'll never forget it.

The recent RCOH removed that mount. Now she has the RIM116 RAM I believe....but no mounts on the Island.

The idea is to give them to the soldiers on the ground so that they can utilize them. With the video camera they can see who is hiding in a building, possibly helping to keep the civilian body count down low.

I have seen these ideas on history channel for quite a while. they call it the future soldier.also the rifle with a camera and all this tech.
if you are,or anyone here reading this,I want to know if this would really saves lives.someone earlier in this thread mentioned a RPG hitting it.then what? well guess who has to go in? FOOT SOLDIERS! cant beat or defeat a squad or platoon of trained troops. agree?
cameras are great with these robos, flying drones are great too. but i believe all this tech is not the answer.these terrorists adjust, and they would know how to defeat it.
they do not know how to defeat our troops!NEVER WILL!

Lets Bring 'em home soon

I had a similar experience when I was working on an outdoor receptacle once - I THOUGHT I was going to need to change my drawers! Razzer (I WAS pretty deaf for a while too, hehe.

DANE, I predict that Mr. RPG is gonna waste da HELL out of Mr. Robo. Methinks "situational awareness" of surroundings IS gonna be a LONG TIME coming fer Mr. Robo...

Mr RPG has the definite advantage of his brain being right there with him. Mr. Robo's brain is going to be staring at a lot of suddenly blank screens.

THUD...YUP, AND I worry about the BS I keep seeing about the Grunt with 6 frequencies he will be monitoring in his headset, his laser/starlight vision goggles and the other paraphanalia that is going to weight him down and destroy this "situational awareness" that the ground pounder HAS to rely on!!!

Hell, I'd never even HEARD of "situational awareness" until I read about it 10 years ago and it kicked me in the ASS about being EXACTLY what keep most of us alive in Nam!

Yogi, a fighter pilot who flew Phantoms in Nam told me that when they are about to lock ass with a bogey, they start turning all that shit off so they can fly the airplane and make the kill.

As usual the pendelum will swing too far where you got a guy who is superman until his batts run out, then won't be able to fight his way out of a paper bag.

Again, this is a tool for the foot soldiers, not a replacement for them.

Having a very small profile, Mr. Robo ain't going to be all that easy for Mr. RPG to engage.

Norman..It'll be interesting to see the statistics on the drones we have been using and how they have fared with small arms fire. I have little faith in the concept of little R2D2s putt-putting around, taking a peek...

As far as I can tell the drones are doing pretty well, especially if by small arms fire you mean single-man weapons, like rifles and small machine gun type weapons. Those drones move at pretty high speed.

I'm sure Mr Robo will be easier to take out than an airborne drone, but they'll likely prove of some use. Especially, with those ****ers using their pray and spray tactics.

Time will tell.
