The whole thing is just a mess. Cancer is a bad way to die so maybe that will be some small thing.

When "Lockerbie' happened I was with a group that subsequently raised $ 25,000 to help out..So I am of two minds over this.. The guy did get' life' for the crime, so, technically, he should be left in jail to the end..

But, let's face it.. he was the fall guy for the whole plot and the real perps will never be caught/held responsilbe, whether they were the rogue CIA [ the conspiraloons favourite whipping boy ] or QuadaffiDuck or others...

This will be a sore point for generations until the 'tell all' books ferret out the truth after the statute of limitations run out on the quarantined documents or someone steps forward with the 'real' story...

for now, let the old guy die and be done with it..

The whole point is, of course, that Western Democracy is compassionate and forgiving and does not unduly punish even the most heinous of criminals.. [ unlike the so-called Islamic world which sees no problem in flogging a woman for drinking beer ] that's why we hand out rational and reasoned sentences like 150 years to Mr. Madoff and jail people for talking to the press like Mr. Hatch..

so simple when you realize it...

Rocketeer, I am a Libra. I was born to judge with an "eye for an eye". I must admit that my lack of detailed knowledge of this case makes it a bit less potent, however from what I know of this man I say let him rot cancer ridden in jail.

While I realize that, as a Satanist, you may not ascribe to the Judeo-Christian ethic, may I say that ' an eye for an eye' is so Old Testament, and, according to the the New Covenant, one should be tolerant and forgiving, ' turn the other cheek', etc., etc..

further, if one subscribes to the concept of incarceration as a rehabilitative' time out'... one has to accept that after having served one's time in prison, and released, the person is now ready to re-integrate into society, his debt paid in full.. On occasion, the' people' may be compassionate and release a person for' humanitarian reasons' which, in this case, is so that the guy can die with his family..

technically, his sentence wasn't up and, technically, he could have been left to 'complete' his time in jail, dying if that was to be, but...we hope the West can be seen as being 'enlightened' to a point.. It falls under the same reasoning, I guess, that proscribes that a prison must make every effort to save the life of a convict, even though he's on Death Row and scheduled for execution, when they get sick..

That's not to say, that, in this case, the regular folks have to be happy about the man' walking' especially given the reception he had in Libya and the propoganda and spin Quadaffi and his clan are putting on it.

Let's be clear on one thing, this guy was the dupe, sacrificed to make peace, and was in no way the mastermind of the controlling force behind the bombing...as a minor player tossed to the masses to smooth things over, he's served his purpose,, best to let things just run their course and calm down..

layers and issues for discussion, debate and dissection...

nurse!, more beer, STAT!

I don't know why I feel as I do.Maybe because I am a pampered civilian or have a hard heart??
What I do know is that if one of my family were murdered I would want to see the perpetrator punished to the max.If that means dying of cancer in a prison cell,so be it.
I reserve my sympathy for all the families of those murdered/killed.

Rocketeer, it is not much to do with my religion, but more to do with who I am. If the guy was just a pawn then he should have done well to prove it. Not make himself a martyr for something he did not do. If I was in his shoes, that is what I would have done. Not only do I find it completely stupid to put yourself on the line like that I think that he was not thinking about his family, and what they have to endure just by being related to him. I am a firm supporter of the death penalty as I feel that if someone commits a heinous crime then they should pay with their life. This goes for murders, rapist, and child molesters. I believe that it would make people think a bit ore deeply about the actions they pursue.

Sadly...statistics show that the threat of the Death Penalty does not decrease violent crime in any way and is not a mitigating factor when criminals set out to commit 'capital offences '..

Career criminals don't believe they'll get caught, or believe that they'll be able to beat the rap or reduce the sentence [and are usually right on that score -as studies of court cases show ]

and rapists/child molesters and other deviant types such as serial killers are too mentally off-centre to consider the possibility of execution for their deed as a deterrent...

as for the Lockerbie case..the guy was an agent of the Libyans [ though disavowed in true Mission Impossible fashion ] and faced the rap as part of a 'martyrdom/duty' - it was all politically motivated to position Libya back in the 'good books' of the West and allow the West to slap Quaddafi's wrist while not cutting off the flow of his oil..politicing at the highest levels..all the British and US ' disappointment ' over the guy's 'triumphant' return to home is so much hand wringing to placate the voters without rocking the boat with the mad Colonel so that the oil will continue to flow..

damn, there I go being jaded and cynical again...

Rocketeer

Perhaps " the old guy " was at the bottom of the barrel, but he was in the barrel none the less, right? I could care less if he is 300 years old and his gonads hurt : SERVE THE TIME. Also, why all the cheering by Muammar al-Gaddafi if the crime never happened? Didn't Gaddafi deny any involvement at the time? Too bad Bush is gone because old Gaddafi sure was quick to spill the beans and stop ALL mongering after his pal Saddam got canned.

Ah... So due to being mentally weak it would (in effect) be Darwinism if we killed rapists, and child molesters. That works for me as we don't need these types on our planet. Heck I say let’s let their victims have at them if they want to, but kill them none the less. As far as the prisoner in question, I am going to have to say “what Typhoon said”.

Well said, Typhoon! cheer
