I am about to apply for a civilian Federal Govt job....to use the Veteran's preference option, I need to provide a copy of a DD214, thing is, though it is an "Honorable" discharge, I have for "Narrative Reason" for seperation it says, "Unsatisfactory Performance" basically, things just didn't work out for me in the military. I was only 18/19 then, I'm 35 now.
Now, since the document is only to provide "Proof" that I was in the military for 180 days, will this be irrelevant, or will it raise eyebrows with prospective civilian employers (that is if they even look at the DD214, being I think the DD214 is just filed at the HR office only) I'm a bit uneasy about this. Thank you |

It depends on the job you're applying for and
if your Military training speciality and experience are being used as the basis for employment. The C.I.A., F.B.I., other Law Enforcement, TSA or other Homeland Security positions 'might' factor in that early unsat performance... however...most of what 'The Government' looks at... is what you've done in the 'past 5 years' and other factors directly related to the position you've applied for. The 'HR Office' will only check the 'significant' blocks. According to your post...your 180+ days Service and your 'Honorable Discharge' will earn you 'The Joys of being a Veteran' and you'll get your 'Five Point Veteran's Preference'. Be sure and Salute Ol' Glory when she passes... http://www.opm.gov/veterans/html/vetguide.asp Good luck with your job efforts. Serve with Pride and get above your 'raising'. THanks for the info Weather man
Well, what I did in the Military has nothign to do with the job desc. I'm applying for, so that's a good thing. I was figuring if the DD 214 even gets to the hiring Supervisor at the location I'm applying for? Or they only pay attention to the whole "Honorable Discharge" thing and that's it and not go 'WOAH, Unsat Performance??, what's up with that? So much I've been tempted, when making copies to "cut off" that bottom portion of that form, lol....but, that might get noticed as well. Not particuarly proud of that DD214 with that just "Down there" on the form. Though it seems to contradict the whole "Honorable Discharge" thing, but I guess you can do a not so great job, and still receive that status...guess they Didn't think I was THAT bad. |
