AirborneHound! When I saw that picture this mornin' "NO FEAR" and it in the bathtub; well, I almost ruined a handrolled cigar and almost dumped coffee on the "thingie" but he was already hidin'!!!!!!!
KIT: I hear ya on your concerns! Ya know I am a strong conservative and I don't necessarily like some of what I see. The government could declare Marshall Law and suspend the Constitution during emergencies anytime they wanted without the Homeland Security shit!
I do know that if it was even remotely true your concerns; well they would be a hell of a lot of us on both sides fighting together!

While there, I got into a political discussion with my son in law and it set me to thinking about something which y'all might like to think about too.
This administration has embarked on a war of generational length, one which has even been described as a "state of perpetual war."
Disregarding the fact that I, personally, think that's unsustainable, I'm curious as to just how they expect to remain in power that long? Sooner or later, SOMEONE from outside the neo-con stable has to win an election, don't they? As opposition to the war rises (as I think it will) how does Bush and Company intend not only to fight it, but defeat it for 20 or 30 or 40 years without losing power?
How CAN they reasonably expect to do that without completely chucking free elections?
All I want to know is how do you make General around this place.
Then I will give you an answer to your stupid question

DANE...The so-called "Patriot Act" WAS a power-grab that even our Congress didn't recognize and it WILL come back to haunt us...
Last Summer, one of the Sgts. of our Police Department came by my clinic and asked if I would post a poster they had prepared...announcing that our local police WOULD be pulling over younger drivers for license/registration/insurance "checks" much more often...
I asked him if there had been some kind of surge in accidents and he gave me the excuse that the "Patriot Act", they believe, enables them to pull folks over more often now and it will be a great way to intercept these drug offenders...
stop panicking..shiitt...the patriot act is will be used to infringe upon some "liberties"...yes thats what happens in war, it doesnt mean american is now sliding down into dictatorship.. You guys are sounding like the luny left.
our police pulls us over, whenever they feel like it for an ID check, and they can request that I open my bag/trunk etc I have to open up my bag and get "wanded" when I walk in my bank, or other places. Major shopping centers? my car is checked, including opening up the trunk....
and you know what? I know that they are on MY side, and they are doing their job to protect me. Yes my civil liberties are infringed upon, well life isnt perfect, but is our democracy in dangers of "sliding down"...that path to a dictatorhip?...hell no.
so stop with the luny tunes...the independence of the american citizen is imbedded far deeper than any "patriot act' can get to.
The GWOT transcends democrats and republicans. Doesn't matter who is in power.
WE are in for the duration, however long that may be.
You and I won't see the end of it.
RE: Like the policy of containment, otherwise known as the Cold War? You may be right. It too was generational in length and spanned several administrations from both parties.
However, it wasn't hot all those years and we did fracture over Korea, Vietnam and Nicaruagua when the bullets started flying. Is there any reason to suspect that this war will be any different?
Re: Yes. One big one. Eventually the country did fracture over Korea, Vietnam and Nicaruagua, however, we weren't fighting them on our shores.
Are our people now more mature and knowledgeable and more able to make a long term committment in spite of the bloodshed? I'm unconvinced of that, but time will tell.
Re: More mature? Nah.
But the GWOT is so unlike previous wars, a lot of the same "people" will think entirely different. 9/11....
Here's another possibility: With certain provisions of the Patriot Act allowing government officials to define "terrorism", "terrorist" and "terrorist supporters" however they wish, without overview; with court cases now making their way through the system which allows that same government to hold people incommunicado and forever, without charges, based simply upon a designation as "enemy combatant" or "detainee," (designations also made without overview) and with court cases designed to expand that authority to cover US citizens as well, the mechanisms for containing dissent are well in hand, or nearly so.
Re: I think that may be taking it a bit far, but yogi's example of the poster does show how the act can be abused.
Drastic times call for drastic measures. I'm certainly not in favor of giving up any of our civil liberties but we've got to beat these bastiches. They are in our back yard.
I'm not saying that this is the way they intend to keep themselves in power for a generation or more, but they will have the legal capability to squash all dissent should it arise and should they chose to use it.
Re: I don't believe we would ever let it get that far. I know for one, I cherish my freedom. I know we all do. The legal capability may be there, but "squash all dissent"? I don't think so.
