1. take charge of this post and all government property in view.
2. walk my post in a military manner keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing. 3. report all violations of orders i am instructed to enforce. 4. repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse or quarter deck than my own. 5. quit my post only when properly releived. 6. recieve, obey, and pass on to the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the commanding officer, command duty officer, officer of the day, officer of the deck, and all officers and petty officers of the watch only. 7. talk to no one except in the line of duty. 8. give the alarm in case of fire or disorder. 9. call the corpral of the guard or officer of the deck in any case not covered by instructions. 10. salute all officers, and all colors and standards not cased. 11. be especially watchful at night and in times for callenging, challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority. ... so i'm joining the military. punch me. Looks good to me a little different from what I remember but that was over 30 years ago.

Here's the easy way to recall these general orders:
1. to take charge.... 2. walk my post... 3. report all violations... 4. repeat all calls.... 5. quit my post... 6. receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry that relives me... 7. talk to no one... 8. give the alarm... 9. call the corporal of the guard... 10. salute all officers and... 11. be especially watchful at night.... Repeat these first few words of each general order, in that order until you are being tested. While you are repeating them, read the entire order. BUT remember those first key words. This will help you memorize the entire set of orders. Just so you know, there are many variations of these orders, but I won't go into them here as they are of a humorous nature and might cause you to utter them at the most inappropriate time..... well gee, if i had those variations i would be the star cadet... and then my c.o. would slap me into my senior year. but i'm sure the immature little boys would love it.
but yeah, i will try to get them down. its just they expect us to do this and homework and school and then drill comps and everything.... sometimes its hard to get stuff to stick. do they still actually use these orders, or are they just thrown at you in blt?(or boot camp, whatever ya call it) ... so i'm joining the military. punch me. Yes, they do use these orders, each branch has their own, each being different, but similar. It's one of the jobs that everyone does in the military, standing a post from time to time. In boot camp you'll stand a fire watch. When you get out to the "real" world, you'll stand a variety of them.

I'm glad that we only have 3 general orders!!
1. I will take charge of my post and protect personel and property until properly relieved. 2. I will report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce and call upon my superior in any case not covered by instructions. 3. I will sound the alarm in any case of fire or emergency. If you'd been where I'd been... if you'd seen the things I'd seen!...... you'd be me... Or someone following me around... |

Speaking of general orders, has anyone seen the previews for the movie Jarhead? (http://www.jarheadmovie.com/welcometothesuck.html)
The movie looks true-to-life. It may have the best depiction of Marine boot camp since Full Metal Jacket. |
