Well, this is a new section! Thought I'd "activate" it. I don't have a job service, nor in a position to hire people. The one skill I do have (and can offer) is job interview assistance. I was an interrogator for 17 years and received training in both law enforcement interviews and civilian interview hiring processes. Have also trained personnel in interviewing skills (including HR personnel). So, "I know what they know".

hey Guns, can I count on you when I perform interviews for my company? Perhaps we could do a virtual interview session with them over the net with a little webcam and such

Attitude is important so you need to up your BS ability if you want to work for good money or change your attitude (the better choice because it lasts longer than the ability to BS long term).

Being able to convey during the interview process that you are a team player, implies that you have actually been a successful participant of a team before. This is a crucial point that needs to come across to the team leader that you are attempting to become an integral part of.
The attitude about 'I'm only in it for the money' simply means that this will surface during the interview process and will result in a no offer extended. (at least were I performing the interview) This message has been edited. Do some research about the company. Find out about their strategic goals, policies, services, community activity, donations, etc. That will probably give you some good material to answer the question. Hopefully you'll find a good reason (other than the money) for working for that company.
And I say hopefully you find a legitimate reason for working for that company because it's always better to go with the truth than try to BS your way through the interview. A good interviewer will see right through it. AFTER you mention some of the other reasons, tell the truth almost as an afterthought- "...and the money is not bad either." A little story about mentioning the money up front did work for me, however-- The company I work for is NOT for the money, but the work environment is fantastic and I love working for them. Another company offered me a position, more money, but a crappy environment. I was fairly secure in my current position to tell them in an interview that I WOULD work SOLELY for THE MONEY, but I wanted to change the environment. I wanted to be in a management position to do so. They wouldn't budge on the management issue, but would pay significantly more money. So I told my boss about the offer (leaving the management part out-- see I didn't lie, just omitted). They gave me a raise. I turned the other offer down. |

well he did pull you aside with the response of being more eager and less screwing around. I'd say that qualifies as thin ice....

I'd say kissing a little butt right about now would probably be a good idea. That, and doing what the boss wants. |

Not sure what your boss means by this. "Preventative" could mean many things, most of them not good (meaning you are on thin ice).
However, This could be something he does with everyone? I know the military mindset is to give an "initial counseling" to everyone just to ensure they know "the rules". Some employers do this as well, and sometimes it comes across as a "preventative" ass chewing. And maybe this is not done to everyone. Maybe just to those of a certain age group (are you a "young guy"?). I think you're right to be confused. Depending on your relationship with your boss, maybe you could ask to clarify what the "preventative" talk was all about. That's what I do when I'm called into the boss' office-- I ask up front "Did I f--k up?" (or words to that effect). I usually get a straight answer. Then again, that's my boss. I don't know if yours would give a straight answer or would respond to that kind of direct question. |

It's a shot over the bow, take it seriously.
I work for a global company and we are a massive family that are loyal to each other and our objectives. Just as leaders in the military, our leadership knows when someone is just "there for the money" and you will get your arse handed to you quickly if you become a weed... This message has been edited.
