In the not-to-distant future, my service obligation will be up. I know I'll be completing a shore tour, which should give me the best opportunities for job-hunting. If any of you old-timers can help me out, that would be much appreciated.
I am looking into the following possibilities: -Government job -Reserves -One that combines both Questions I'm looking into: -If I leave the Navy with X years active, Y years in-active, will a federal job be the Z number of years for a retirement pension? (For the not-so-math-savvy, Does time in the civilian job count in addition to the military time served?) -If I "do my (total) 20," will I get retirement pay immediately, or wait until I'm 55/57/60/62? -If you are a Reservist working a government job, how accommodating are they during your call-ups? -If you fit into any of the above categories, what job field are you in? I'll be sure to post more questions as my curiosity rises and my time left decreases. una per praesidium |

If you retire as a reservists, you won't receive a pension until 62 for most reservists. You won't get anything immediately.
There are all kinds of options offered for combining/separating/counting federal service and military service and military reserve time. It involves a computer rivaling Deep Thought, a voo-doo priest and some chicken bones. Seriously, there are a myriad of options, you have to do the math and figure out the best option for you and your future plans. The quick answer to your question though is-- yes, all that time can be combined and counted for a retirement plan (or you can opt to receive two pensions- don't listen to the sea lawyers who say you can't). Government positions are extremely accommodating when it comes to releasing reservists to training and deployments when they get to reap the benefits of that training and experience when you come back. Not so accommodating when it's taking away from them with no return. They say they are, but.... I am not a reservists, but a close friend of mine is an activated reservists (he's at 10 years active duty, 10 years reserve and he's been juggling the numbers and bouncing them off me-- that's how I know much of this stuff). I also work with and train reservists all the time and get to hear their horror stories. Just graduated a class of reservists las week as a matter of fact. |
