Hey,
I was going through my options for when my Enlistment will be up. I was wondering. How is it possible to become a military contractor?? I'm just curious how to even start. Kind of a broad question. I mean after I finish my degree and get some certifications. (I'm a 3C0) Do you have to apply like every other job?? Or actually any IT job in general. Whats a good site to start with?? Thank you |

As I am a government contractor and have been one since I retired from the Corps. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. My very last duty station was with a command called SPAWAR in San Diego and we primarily implemented Avaition computer systems on Naval Air Stations, and Aircraft Carriers. I retired and moved up to the bay area, (Sunnyvale, Mountainview Ca) didn't have a job, didn't even have a home yet. We were staying in the Hostess house at Moffett Field Naval Station and a Master Chief from my command was there implementing a system at Moffett. I asked if they needed any help so he took me over and introduced me. I was hired on the spot and was made Site Manager within 3 weeks by the guy that hired me. So it was just pure luck that I came to be a government contractor. Since then I have worked for about 9 different companies under several contracts. I am currently working the single largest government IT contract ever awarded. 9 billion. My company is EDS, Electronic Data Systems, originally created by Ross Perot. Dick Cheney was on our board of directors and gave up his seat to be the Vice President.
And yes, you must have a Secret Security clearance and maintain it. It all depends on what you want to do and what your situation is. First, look around and know what you want to do. Second, determine how much money is acceptable. Third, determine where you want to work/live. And there may be other things you'd like to determine before you conduct a search. Fourth, prioritize all the above. Make some "absolutes"-- somethings you're not willing to compromise (i.e. money- nothing less than 40K). For me (when I retired and started looking), my wife determined my "absolute". She told me "no east coast, I want to go back to CA, but NO east coast". Everything else was negotiable- money, type of job, etc.
Once you have your priorities straight, start looking for contractors that match your criteria. It also helps to "know people". If you happen to know people within these corporations (and they're willing to help you out), it's always better. There are companies out there that accept interviews solely through personal recommendations. As far as sites I know a few people have used this site successfully: http://www.destinygrp.com/destiny/index.jsp If you have a security clearance there are a few sites out there for that: www.clearancejobs.com www.clearedconnections.com And the "regular" job search sites can also provide govt contractor positions-- www.monster.com and others. A surprisingly useful site (as in number of "hits") I found was the Pageflakes job search engine. http://www.pageflakes.com Edit-- Actually Pageflakes uses this site as their search engine (go straight here so you don't have to register with Pageflakes): http://www.indeed.com/ But this is only a great tool if you know the geographic area you want to search in. |
