Hello.
My name is Scott, and I'm looking to join the Naval Reserves soon.

Carry on.

Thanks for the welcome, Gunny. I'll keep you informed.

If anyone's interested, I've got a post in the "Joining the military" forum.

Thanks again!

What part of Naval Reserves are you looking at? I used to be a member of the Admirals staff down in New Orleans for all of the Naval Air Reserves.

Funny thing... I'm really going to let the ASVAB tell me what I should do. Well, I hope that it will tell me "this, this, and this are what you'd be good at," and I'll look into those to see if I'd like them.

Every job change I've had was a MAJOR change from the last, and I'm sick of it. I want to find something I'm really good at and enjoy, and I want to stick with it.

Naval pilot would be nice, though I think I'm a bit too old, and I think the reserves demands that you either have extensive civilian training, or come from the regular Navy to be a pilot. I'm not sure I'd like to work the ground crew...

yeah, everyone wants to be a fighter pilot. Your plan is a good one as the ASVAB tells you where your strengths are.

Ground crew for aircraft isn't a bad job, there is tons of satisfaction to ge gained from doing it. But the testing will point out the jobs you are best suited for. You might be surprised in the results and varity of different jobs. When I re-enlisted after my first four years, I had three full pages of different jobs I qualified for.

Never could understand the resaoning.. Want to fly so you join the Navy?? You just know they're going to stick you in Subs or , worse behind a desk in Colorado.. Fly? Isn't that what the Air Force was created for?.. oh, wait.. that's for those guys who like Club Med ...

The Navy...anyone seen the trailers for " Annapolis "? with Josh Harnett or his clone...50, 000 applicatns but only the 'best' get in or some such hoohaw.

" well son, after extensive testiong and study we feel you are just the type of person this Navy needs. Welcome.. you report to chef school at 0800 Thursday. Hope you like Navy beans .."

Actually, at 29 I'm too old for fighter duty. Besides, as much fun as that sounds, I was thinking more along the lines of helo pilot.

That's what I'm hoping.

I'm not knocking it, I'm sure it's a good job, but I'm not sure it's for me. Though, I could think of about a hundred things I rather do /less/

That's cool! My hope is that I'll get some training and qualify for OCS, as I have a degree. Unfortunately, it's not a degree the Navy has much use for. So I'm going about it the hard way...

Heh. The Navy has the second most aircraft, behind the Army, last I heard.

I'm too old for bubblehead duty, and a desk job? Well, it wouldn't be ideal, but at least I'd be serving my country.

You mean there's a reason it's called the "Chair Force"? Really, though, flying is only one of my interests.

Nope, never seen it. But are you saying Annapolis /isn't/ an elite school? I believe graduating from any of our military colleges is a grand accomplishment.

Yeah, that would suck, but I really doubt it would happen. Besides, I'm talking about going into the Reserves - do they even have that type of job?

Not personally acquainted with US Naval Reserves to comment on whether they have Cooking School [ given what sailors eat when on shore leave I'm thinking no..] but I'm sure there will be some obscure niche they're just dieing to fill.

Admiral to Recruiter: " Message from Joint Chiefs says we don't have enough bolt counters.. Next six guys who are dumb enough to enlist tell them they've been ' specially slected for unique and vital tasks ' and ship 'em out "
Recruiter: " Yes, Sir! "

Gee, maybe you're right, Rocketeer. In that case, I shouldn't enlist... Roll Eyes
