I used to post here some time ago. I'm 36, married, with children, work full-time with Sheriff Department and member of the ANG. I'm in the process of going AD Army because of my desire to serve full-time in a Combat MOS. I'm going 19D or 11B, but have also looked at 13F as another option, but it will most likely be one of the first two. I'm doing this with the full support of my wife along with her Patriotism and shared feelings of us being involved full-time in doing what is right, and necessary, to help secure a better future for our children, and all good Americans. I'm proud to be part of this with all of you! Thanks!

pdu850,
Glad to see you again. Regular Army! 31B (MP) might be a better place for your experience...but hey...it's your enlistment. I know some guys with dependants are the last sent on some 11B missions. However if your SWAT heavy...then combat could vindicate your training and experience. It's a dangerous job for sure. Thanks for your service civil and military and thanks to your family too. Prayers all around. Let us know how it's going. God Bless you and family. wx (cool avatar too...my Great Uncle Gabriel was MIA during WWI in France) This message has been edited. Weatherman, thanks for the blessings! It's much appreciated! Funny you should mention it about 31B. Someone on another forum asked the same thing. For some reason my local Recruiters have seemed very disinterested in helping me get into an MP position although it is the FIRST one that I mentioned because of my interests. I do know that it is not exactly like civilian Law Enforcement with alot of "Guard" duties and Combat duties, but I do want to be involved in the Combat duties as well. It is still kindof up my alley with alot of training that I can relate to. As a matter of fact I do have good verbal skills in my line of work, but it is the tactical stuff that I enjoy the most. All I can figure is that this MOS is an easy one to fill and my Recruiters want to "encourage" me into other MOS's that I have also showed interest in. In some ways I feel that I would get more opportunity to do the tactical type of things in a 19D MOS or 11B MOS more often than as an MP. I have asked other experienced folks so I will ask you too. My age number doesn't bother me (36). I feel young, I'm in good shape, and my wife is on board with all of this 100% for all the same reasons as I am. I want to be in a combat MOS (or MP). What's your opinion, or experiences with "older" very capable individuals such as myself entering this MOS? I have the desire, but do you know how many like me do it? My only concern is that I feel great still, but how many even older than me do you see in this MOS? It may be many for all I know, I just don't hear of it? Yes, I like the Avatar too. I am a big supporter of not letting people forget. I also wear a POW/MIA bracelet with the name of SSG Jerry W. Elliott (MIA), Door Gunner who was lost after an ambush in SVN in 1968. God Bless them all! Thanks!

It's a new ARMY since I wore green.
Back in the day...'36' was considered alll-most... over the hill for such MOSs. However your experience will be of great value. It's not your first rodeo. My favorite expression from the 80s: 'Go for it!' |

Yea! Another 19D is a sight to behold! Although I am a bit biased towards that MOS, if you really want 31B, MP, it's there, as long as you are ASVAB and Phys. qualified for it, tell 'em to load it from the ROC. (Although coming from the ANG, they will definitely try to cross-level you into your current MOS.) If you stay on the Cavalry Scout path, I'll be more than willing to give you the skinny on what's new in the Cav Scout realm these days.
Weatherman: Its still around, its called ACASP, Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program. ACASP slots open up, you can use your training and experience to go up to E-5, its a seldom used program, so there is a lot of opportunity there. "Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in Fire and Blood, and come out Steel!" |

Thank you as well CavScout! One of the many reasons that I want to do this is because now that I have spent some time in the ANG, OIF included, I definately want a more direct combat role and am positive the Army will provide that. That is probably the first thing that I told the Army Recruiter when I talked to him. I specified that my interests are in the tactical/ combat things and not so much in the technical maintanence type of things. At least not as a member of the Military. He told me that if I wanted a combat MOS that it should be no problem. If the Army only offers me a similar job to what I have now, then I will just stay with the ANG because I will get more of the type of thing that I like at my job with the Sheriff's Department. I am very interested in 19D! It is the MOS that I want to do most. Can you give me the skinny? What's your opinion or experience about an "older" recruit in this MOS? I know I can do it, and I am very confident that I have the mentality and heart that the Cav Scouts want with them. What's the future like, long range, and even the near future for an older recruit such as myself even if I can still kick some a** a few years down the road, or do you think it's a little late to start this type of MOS now? Thanks CS!
