quote: For myself..I can say that most of the time it was at least warm. But only excellent when the Mess Cranks were up for a 'Ney' Award or when we had High Muckety Mucks come to visit. It wasn't bad overall. My favorite meal was breakfast, which was supper if you worked Nightcheck. |

Reference MREs (Meals Rejected by Everyone!) were the worst that the military ever devised! I'll take C-rats or especially LRRP rats any day!
during Desert Storm, we lived on MREs! I came back weighing 136lbs! I am 6'4" tall! I wouldn't recommend them to dogs! |

Maybe AirborneSpoon would like to weigh in.
He's the 'MRE Junkie'. As for me, I like the ones I've tasted...but Navy chow spoiled my pallette years ago. I admit to a weakness for Institutional Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. Tastes the same everywhere whether on the mess decks, galley or civvy cafeteria. |

Hal: I will go with Army chow anyday! The spoons in the Army are the best! I wouldn't have said that the first time I was in the Army as most was surplus and terrible! But the cooks were the best! When I went back in I still remember standing in front of the food line and was in astonishment as to what a variety and well put together menu they had! I remember the mess sergeant askin' me why I was just standing there and then it dawn on him that I was prior service. He just smiled and said what a different eh! I have ate Air Force and Navy chow, Give me an Army spoon anyday.
I remember some of my best times were late at night on field problems the mess tent always had at least a soup, crackers, coffee and good conversation. Those are still some of my favorite memories. God Bless the Spoons! |

I think that is one thing in life I will never experience.
I have to admit, I've heard very few complaints over the years of hot Army fare. At least you don't wait in line for 45 minutes for breakfast, get lucky enough to snag a box of Froot Loops only to find weevils inside... That, my friend is the stuff MUTINIES are made of!!! |

Was dfafted in 1/66. Came home with a few medals as an E-6. Only did the two years but feels like I never got out. |

Hal: I understand that the MREs have improved over what I had back in '91. I too have a weakness for mash potatoes!
By the way, the weevils were just good protein! |
