Hi! I discovered this forum while doing some research on ball turret gunners from WWII. My grandfather was a BTG (Hells Angels 303rd).

re: Books about military experience.
I am a military brat (Father USAF Retired) and my brother was in the Gulf War (USMC). All of my Uncles (Father's side) were in the service in WWII. By chance or fate, several of my friends from church decided to write books about their military experiences. So I recently started a small indepedent press to help them out (this is not a sales pitch with no intention to violate forum rules - If I should post this in another category more appropriate just let me know). These books may be worth checking out if there are any avid readers out there. Two Days of Doubt by Hugh Cort, the 70th Tank Battalion and the Korean War https://www.booksonboard.com/index.php?BODY=viewbook&BOOK=267333 Sisters of Valor by Rosalie T. Turner, the Vietnam War as told by four wives "fighting" on the homefront http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Sisters-of-Valor/Rosal...9780979237522/?itm=1 This book will be released (with the author onsite) during Memorial Day weekend 2009 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire, NM. The Memorial was originally known as the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel and is dedicated not only to the Marines of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment but to all members of America's armed forces. Proceeds of book sales are going to help the foundation/park. |

My name is Tyler and I'm currently in the midst of a strong period of deliberation between enlisting in the Marine Corps or the Air Force. I've come here looking for further guidance and information and hope to be a productive member of your community.
I'm a college student in Springfield, Missouri majoring in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology. My grandfather was retired USAF spending 22 years between 1940 and 1962 in the Air Force and flying twenty-five missions over Europe as the top-turret gunner on the B-17 "Raunchy Wolf." His crew also spent time in Africa during the war. He has always been a big influence on me and continues to be despite having passed on in 1998. I hope to follow in his footsteps in dedicating himself and his career to serving his country. |

Thanks for the greeting Sully. My family on my dad's side are native folks to the Ozarks, it's a damned fine place to grow up if I do say so myself, haha.

That would be my preference, Coachman. We have a Marine Corps Officer Selection Office right across the street from campus. However I've run out of money for school and the financial aid just isn't enough anymore.
In light of that though, I feel like it may make me a better officer if I spend time as an enlisted man first. I read a lot of talk from enlisted men and women who can't stand their lieutenants for any number of reasons, mostly because they simply don't understand the job. Certainly not as well as any of the SNCOs. So I kind of feel like spending time as an enlisted man will only benefit me in the transition to officer duties. |

You have a great point Tyler, though in my 21 yrs in the Army I have seen alot of good to great officer's that I would follow through the gates of HELL and some I would help open the same gates they were that bad. IMHO there are more good than bad officers. Good luck in what ever you decide to do. Let us know how your doing.

I will definitely stick around, so I'll make updates now and again on how the enlistment process goes once I get started.
(Don't worry, I'll be remembering that beer.) |
